Informații cronologice cu privire la cariera candidatului și domeniul de activitate:
Cornel Amariei was born in a different family – both of his parents suffered from locomotive handicap. Growing up, he was exposed to a severely different environment. This environment made him more ambitious and creative. By the age of 3, he was already reading, and he learnt programming at age 7.
The first major breakthrough was in his teens. At age 14, Cornel obtained his first International Medal in a robotics competition, with a project meant to simplify home security by using webcams and computer microphones to track the situation in houses. Following it, a multitude of projects were born. Some of the more memorable one was a search robot designed to be sent in the remaining of a collapsed building. It was fully designed and built by Cornel at age 14, and it was capable to be remotely controlled, send video, and data about the gases around the robot. The project obtained 5 Gold Medals in IT and Robotics competitions around the globe.
After several other awards, he was invited to found the first high-school robotics club in Romania. It was in his own high school, the International Computer High School of Bucharest, while being in 10th grade. Here, Cornel thought physics, electronics, programming, mechanics and the combination of all – robotics. Over the following years over 100 students attended the classes and they brought over 150 international medals to Romania and the club. In the same year in which Cornel founded the robotics club he got hired as a Research and Development engineer at the technical security company MB Technology LTD. There, he began as a programmer but quickly ended managing the engineering of a ATM security project, called SRS. Following it, he was part of the team which developed the only airplane scanner in the world, the Roboscan Aeria.
While in 11th grade, Cornel founded his first company, with a few fellow high-school students. Clock Records was making customized wall clocks out of vinyl disks. The company sold almost 1,000 clocks internationally, and represented Romania at the European Trade Fair in Zurich, Switzerland. Just one year after, he founded his second company – Chemcraft, an educational software company which developed chemistry apps for the iOS platform. At its peak, there were over 150,000 people from 70 countries using the app.
Following it, Cornel left Romania for university which he did at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany. There, he studied both Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. While a student, he returned to old passions – performing in rock bands in tens of concerts, but also continuing his business and engineering career. There, he wrote the Arduino Development Cookbook, a technical book which sold in over 20 countries.
One of his main achievements happened during his second university year. While discussing with a friend, they accidentally reached the expression „glasses for the blind”. Upon researching it, they found no such system exists, and that there are over 40 million visually impaired people around the world. Working on this, Cornel invented .lumen. Combining 3D sensorics and advanced electric skin impulse devices, the system was capable of explaining the environment in which the user was. Using it, a blind person was capable of regaining some spatial awareness. During tests, visually impaired individuals were capable of navigating through open doors, without touching them, detecting the shape of a room or even catching a ball for the first time in their lives. Major investments were required to develop .lumen, which were obtained from investors in both Romania and Germany. While the system worked with great accuracy in indoor situations, outdoor testing revealed major issues with the 3D sensors and the project was temporally halted, waiting for sensor technology to advance.
While .lumen was on hold, Cornel returned to Romania and joined Continental Automotive. For a short while he worked on several e-mobility projects, but then he began inventing new systems and started founding the first innovation group in his location. One year and a half later, the innovation team was recognized worldwide, Cornel applied for over 30 patents and was leading more than 10 innovation projects.
Currently, Cornel pursues his career at Continental, leading innovation projects which will provide the vehicles of the future, while also pushing .lumen. One of the most recent venture is a new start-up which deals with creating mobility devices for people with locomotive handicap, inspired from the condition of his parents.
For his accomplishments, Cornel was nominated as one of the 10 most influential people under 30 in Europe, by Forbes Magazine, and one of the 100 visionary leaders under 30 by Real Leaders.
Detalii suplimentare cu privire la realizările excepționale ale candidatului și provocările cu care s-a confruntat pentru a le atinge:
Throughout his life, Cornel was always burdened with less than favorable situations. Both of his parents having locomotive handicap severely affected his childhood. With time, their condition took its toll and their medical and financial condition severely worsen. Due to this, Cornel left home at age 14, when he started high school. He was required to work in order to provide for himself. Just a few months after he left, he wasn’t only financially independent but already helping his parents, which he still does today. Cornel also has a sister with severe handicap, but it’s a private part of his life. However, all of these challenges made him more ambitious, which was one of the main motivators in obtaining all of his successes.
